Working with the Autonomic Nervous System – Part B
Counselling to Develop Resilience. Living in our current global political and economic climate, resilience is key to one's psychological and physical health.
Working with the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) facilitates developing this ability.
Using our social engagement systems is the key here.
This system is a major connection of the Ventral Vagus Nerve in the orbicularis oculi around the eyes, as well as connecting our speech and hearing with our hearts and lungs.
When we are using our social engagement system connecting directly with another our heart rate is regulated and our breathing, enabling a parasympathetic response.
Its at this time, that we are at our optimum functioning in the moment, and this is strengthening our mental and physical health. This is why face to face talking therapy can be so very effective.
By this we address adverse experiences to develop resilience.
After all, success is not how we handle triumph but how we handle defeat!
And we have a wonderful God leading us, who promises:
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Joshua 1.9.
All Bible quotations are from the NIV.
