Narcissism

Narcissism is an interesting topic and one that surfaces frequently in my practice with clients who have suffered or are still suffering narcissistic abuse.

From a psychology perspective, we are all on the spectrum. Altruism is the polar opposite, and without some degree of narcissism, we would not be able to look after our essential needs.

The hallmarks of narcissism are a combination of self-importance, self aggrandisement, and inability to empathise.

In therapy, these complex personas can be explored and understood. Which then leads to developing ways of relating to the narcissist. Without this work the individual unconsciously either flies or fawns.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else. For each one should carry their own load." Galatians 6.3-5
